I tried Nexium for a month or so, but ended back on Prilosec. The Nexium just didn't do as well for me as Prilosec. I was taking a 40mg tablet a day, but when a 20mg generic version became available, I had my doctor prescribe 1 - 20mg tablet - twice a day. A generic 40mg version was not available yet so this way my insurance will pay all but $10 per refill. The 40mg name brand Prilosec was previously costing me $35 per refill.

As for the health issues........I did read about acid blockers causing calcium deficiencies in some people because they also block absorption od calcium. I asked my doctor about this and he said to not be too concerned about it.........that the testing was done only on aging women for which most suffer from a calcium deficiency after menopause at that age anyway, plus they were given higher than normal doses.

As for these drugs being bad for you......in my case it is the lesser of the 2 evils. I was on the verge of esophageal cancer because of the eroding of the lining of my esophagus that was caused by the excess acid. I was getting hoarse and kept a persistent dry cough most of the time before getting the acid under control. For now I'm gonna keep taking the Prilosec.
